Dr. Smith isn’t afraid of muck or shy about explaining how humans contribute to the detritus
and pollution that clog the rivers and estuaries critical to the survival of Florida’s wildlife. Her
work in ecological restoration projects not only investigates but mitigates the human impact on fisheries and oyster beds. And she puts her knowledge to work in her backyard, planting local grasses and vines which thrive in North Florida instead of water guzzlers that require pesticides and do not harbor local fauna. Practicing what she preaches – see, how I wove religion into this introduction- is part of Dr. Smith’s activist philosophy and pedagogy. In this episode, she explains her work in estuaries from New Jersey to Florida.
Enjoy!
